Sagnol retires, ‘but my heart’s still here’

After the painful experience of announcing his enforced retirement from football due to injury, Willy Sagnol ended the day with a smile on his face. Prior to an FCB.tv interview, he watched footage of himself in action for Bayern – swerving his way past three opponents at the Allianz Arena, firing in his feared crosses from the right flank, even wildly celebrating a goal or two. Perhaps he also heard the fervent and drawn-out cries of “Willyyyyy” from the loyal fans on the south terrace, a paean of praise we will no longer hear at the stadium to the north of Munich.

“That’s the end. The pain is too great for me to continue playing. It’s something I have to accept,” the 31-year-old declared. Willy’s career has been cut short by persistent Achilles problems. “I’m devastated and it’s hard to take. I’d always dreamed it would end differently, and I’d have liked to keep playing for at least another few years,” he added.

Hoeneß regretful

After consulting a string of specialists the length and breadth of Europe in a bid to overcome an injury sustained in pre-season training and which later required surgery, Sagnol has been forced to admit defeat. “I’ve tried everything in recent weeks, but the doctors are unanimous: I can’t go on.” Simply walking is causing the player pain. As he is unable to exercise his official profession of footballer, Sagnol will now file for the status of ‘sports invalid’, required by both club and player for insurance and other technical reasons.

Impressive medal haul

He pulled on a Bayern shirt for the very last time in a friendly against Köln last July. Sagnol also provided 40 assists in 184 Bundesliga outings, a more than respectable figure for a defender.

Manager position beckons

-Te hizo sentir Beckenbauer.

-Ja, ja, ja. No, Beckenbauer no. Pero quería que arrancara el partido ya. La verdad es que esa ansiedad que uno tiene al vivir una experiencia nueva, se me hizo fácil de absorber por el apoyo que me dio Alfio.

Ahí Demichelis enfoca su discurso en Basile: "Creo que hace muy simple este mundo tan complicado que algunos intentan hacer creer que es el futbol".

-¿Un técnico así es ideal para esta época donde los combinados nacionales, por una cuestión de tiempo, necesitan más un seleccionador que un entrenador?

-Mirá, Alfio es un destacado. Y a la hora de elegir, lo hace a su gusto, a su manera, y me parece que lo hace bien, con todo el respeto por los jugadores que no están. Obvio que se puede equivocar. Pero hoy no hay mucho tiempo para trabajar. Es la realidad. Cada uno llega con sus viajes, con su cansancio. Creo que él es un moderador y un tiempista ideal para estas situaciones.

-Ahora que sos titular sin ningún tipo de dudas, ¿pensás en algún momento que la Selección tiene "2" para rato?

-No. ¿Sabés por qué? Porque yo cambié de forma de pensar cuando me ocurrió lo del Mundial 2006. Ya tenía las valijas preparadas y me quedé afuera de la lista. Entonces, ahora pienso a corto plazo. No vivo diciéndome que hay "2" para rato en la Selección ni ninguna de esas cosas. Depende de lo que haga en mi club. Tengo que seguir evolucionando y debo aprovechar que estoy en una edad linda (27 años) para continuar creciendo, aunque hoy creo que me encuentro con una madurez importante.

Estira la respuesta: "Era difícil imaginar que iba a terminar jugando los últimos partidos en la Selección, pero acá estoy. Esas son las cosas lindas del fútbol. A veces te sorprende. Y a mí me sorprendió con lo que soñaba. Porque no hay club más lindo que la Selección".

-¿Te ves como el nuevo Ayala?

-No sé. Creo que no se puede comparar porque Roberto tiene una cantidad grandísima de partidos con esta camiseta. Hoy me siento bien, la gente ya sabe cuál es mi puesto, me gustaría estar en toda la etapa hacia el Mundial y por supuesto sueño con el 2010. Hoy, hace 27 años en la ciudad de Justiniano Posse, en la provincia de Córdoba en Argentina, nació una de las personas que mas admiro y quiero de todos... Martín Gastón Demichelis, excelente jugador de fútbol y por lo que he escuchado, un chico con buen sentido del humor, con un corazón enorme, sencillo, humilde y que tiene a Dios siempre presente en lo que hace. No se si Micho lea esto algún día, pero de ser así, espero q sepa que pase lo que pase, yo estaré ahí apoyandolo a muerte y que siempre ocupará un lugar especial en mi corazón. Dios te Bendiga y te Proteja Micho, gracias por darnos tanta alegría a todos nosotros tus fans, te deseo lo mejor y espero que sigas siendo la buena persona que eres. Te quiero!

(FIFA.com) Martes 13 de noviembre de 2007El pasado 14 de julio de 2007 ocupa un lugar oscuro en el calendario futbolístico de la selección argentina, que no sólo cayó por goleada en la final de la Copa América frente a Brasil, sino que vio a su capitán y símbolo de la última década, Roberto Ayala, despidiéndose del equipo con un gol en contra.

Desde entonces, mucho se especuló en la nación Albiceleste sobre la escasez de variantes para reemplazar al actual futbolista del Zaragoza. Encuestas, debates y artículos al respecto demostraban la obsesión de los medios y la afición en torno al tema. No obstante, la solución al dilema estaba al alcance de la mano: Martín Demichelis, ex futbolista de River Plate y actual marcador central del Bayern Munich alemán, fue el elegido por Alfio Basile para ocupar el hueco dejado por el defensor entrerriano.

Y vaya si cumplió el cordobés. A saber: en su debut bajo el mando del Coco, anotó el único gol del partido amistoso disputado el 11 de septiembre ante Australia. Y pocas semanas después, se afianzó en el puesto y colaboró para que los argentinos mantengan su arco invicto en sus primeros dos partidos de las eliminatorias rumbo a la Copa Mundial de la FIFA Sudáfrica 2010. "Mirar para adelante"
A la hora de analizar su exitoso presente en el combinado nacional, se vuelve inevitable la referencia a la desilusión que le significó quedar fuera del plantel mundialista el año pasado. Pero Demichelis, ante la pregunta de FIFA.com, prefiere mirar al futuro: "No es un tema del que me guste hablar demasiado porque forma parte del pasado. Ya hablé mucho al respecto y, claro, significó un gran dolor. Pero ahora quiero pensar en el día a día y en lo lindo que me está pasando. Sólo suma mirar para adelante", explica.

Y ese día a día marca que los medios locales lo destacaron como el gran acierto del entrenador en el debut del equipo en las eliminatorias. Micho lo sabe, y así lo expresa: "Para mí representaba una prueba de fuego jugar estos partidos y no sólo por tratarse del regreso. Hacía mucho que no me veían jugar como marcador central e iba a estar bajo la lupa de todos. Pero por suerte, gracias a la confianza que me dieron el cuerpo técnico y los jugadores, pude rendir en buena forma. Eso sí, contra Chile sentí que podría haber dado un poco más".

La confirmación
En la victoria ante la Roja, Demichelis no sólo se encargó de dejar fuera de órbita a jugadores como Humberto Suazo y Marcelo Salas, sino que logró reencontrarse con el estadio que lo vio dar sus primeros pasos como futbolista. " Era muy especial volver al Monumental y eso me manifestó Basile delante de todo el grupo. Me dijo que conozco el estadio, que estoy acostumbrado a jugar con mucho público y que tenía el apoyo de todos. Esas muestras de apoyo delante de todo el grupo consolidan lo anímico, por lo que voy a estar muy agradecido tanto a él como al resto de los chicos".

¿Qué representa suplantar al gran referente? Es más: ya se lo ve como el sucesor indicado y no le han faltado miradas aprobatorias. "Sí, pero el fútbol es cambiante. Tengo que tomar esto con tranquilidad y seguir aportando lo que puedo", dice.

-Pero ¿no sentís que vas consolidándote en el puesto y en la selección?

-Para verme consolidado necesito tiempo y continuidad. Pero me sentí muy cómodo con el apoyo de mis compañeros, que me hablaron durante los noventa minutos del partido con Chile. Eso facilita muchísimo las cosas y estoy agradecido. Yo soy nuevo en este grupo; para mí es una experiencia especial y siempre hay cosas para corregir. Lo tomo con tranquilidad, con ganas y con responsabilidad.

-¿Hablaste con Roberto Ayala últimamente?

-Por el momento no tuve oportunidad de hablar con Roberto, pero para mí sería un orgullo, algo de lo que podría sacar un gran provecho. El fue un referente de la defensa o en el puesto, durante muchísimos años. Jugó 115 partidos en la selección y dejó un lugar difícil de ocupar. Me encantaría hablar con él.

-¿Sentís que la selección es sólida defensivamente?

-La Argentina es una potencia mundial; en este momento es fuerte en todas las líneas. Ojalá podamos volcar en este camino que recién empieza lo que el equipo es capaz de hacer. El fútbol argentino sigue mereciendo respeto, pese a que hace años que no se ganan cosas. Queremos que éste sea el comienzo de un camino exitoso.

-¿Te sentís preparado por si se te pide que juegues en otra posición?

-Cuando llegué a la primera convocatoria de Alfio Basile, él me dijo que me quería como marcador central. Y creo que es ahí donde más cómodo me siento y donde puedo aportar algo mejor, sea por derecha o por izquierda. Pero acá estamos todos para colaborar; si tiene que jugar por la izquierda, Javier [por Zanetti] lo hace. Y si tengo que colaborar en otra posición, estoy dispuesto, aunque hay muchachos que pueden hacerlo bien, como Javier [Mascherano] o Gago.

-¿Cómo se ve a la Argentina desde el fondo, con tantas variantes y jugadores talentosos?

-En lo personal, cuando la Argentina está volcada en ofensiva, disfruto muchísimo de ver jugar a Messi, Tevez y Riquelme. A todos, sin olvidarme de ninguno, porque sería injusto. Estoy orgulloso de ser partícipe de este equipo. Y no sólo lo disfrutamos los jugadores, sino también la gente. Sentimos que el otro día el público se fue contento. Pero todos los partidos son diferentes.

-A propósito... ¿tenías alguna expectativa sobre cómo jugaría Chile ante la Argentina?

-Había muchísimas expectativas sobre cómo jugaría Chile con nosotros. Eramos conscientes de que, tomando los recaudos necesarios, si la Argentina hacía el juego que es capaz de hacer, con volumen ofensivo y con tantos grandísimos jugadores, ellos estarían más preocupados que nosotros. El objetivo se cumplió.

-Venezuela se siente más confiado que nunca. ¿Puede ser peligroso?

-Los dos llegamos después de una victoria y con grandes expectativas. Será un partido dificilísimo, porque todo el mundo quiere ganarle a la Argentina. Van a dejar la vida, pero nosotros también. Hay que pensar que Brasil fue a Colombia y sólo sacó un 0 a 0. Aquí, la gente va a hacer sentir la presión.

El entrenador argentino Alfio Basile anticipó que podría hacer "uno o dos cambios" para el partido del martes, el segundo por las Eliminatorias mundialistas sudamericanas

Alfio Basile, a quien le gusta formar un equipo que la gente conozca "de memoria", dijo que "si se puede" mantendrá la misma alineación que ayer derrotó a Chile por 2-0 en Buenos Aires.

"Pero en Maracaibo es tremendo el calor que hace y el viento que sopla del norte es insoportable", comentó en rueda de prensa, al referirse al próximo compromiso por esta misma serie eliminatoria.

Recordó que además, el grupo tiene que afrontar un largo viaje hasta Maracaibo, lo que puede influir de alguna manera en el estado general de algún jugador. "Cuando llegue allá se van a enterar de cómo será el equipo", dijo Basile.

El zaguero Gabriel Heinze terminó con una molestia en un abductor, pero "no es nada grave", según dijo el portavoz de prensa, Andrés Ventura, por indicación del jefe médico Raúl Madero.

Basile confirmó que Martín Demichelis es el sucesor de Roberto Ayala. "Yo, cuando pongo un jugador es para bancarlo. Y a Demichelis lo vengo siguiendo desde hace tiempo en el Bayern Munich", dijo.

Respecto del partido de ayer, Basile abundó en elogios para Riquelme, que anotó los dos goles de Argentina y "aguantó los 90 minutos, cosa que no esperaba" porque hace unos tres meses que no juega oficialmente.

Riquelme "es un mago con los pies, es impresionante cómo le pega a la pelota" comentó el entrenador. Y reveló que "ayer (por el viernes), en medio del barro, tuve que decirle que dejara de tirar. Había tirado tres y los metió a los tres en el ángulo. Le tuve que decir: guardá algunos para mañana (por ayer)". Y así fue. Riquelme cumplió y le dio la primera alegría a la
selección albiceleste.

En pocas horas, la selección argentina se medirá con Chile, en el estadio Monumental, y comenzará a desandar su camino en las eliminatorias sudamericanas, en un trayecto, que, seguramente, la depositará en el Mundial de Sudáfrica 2010. Cuando restan menos de mil días para la Copa del Mundo, Alfio Basile sabe que tiene un buen lapso de tiempo para llegar con el equipo en su mejor versión a la máxima cita. El Coco, entre otras cosas, debe decidir quiénes son los acompañantes más atinados para rodear a un talento como Lionel Messi. Sin embargo, hay un interrogante que probablemente esté dando vueltas por su cabeza y quizá con algún signo de preocupación. ¿Quién se afianzará como el reemplazante de Roberto Ayala, que tras la Copa América de Venezuela anunció que no se vestirá más en celeste y blanco?

Ayala (34 años), el hombre que más veces se puso la camiseta del seleccionado en la historia, con 115 presencias, ha sido uno de los símbolos del equipo argentino en los últimos años y su ausencia no pasará inadvertida. El Ratón fue titular en la mayoría de los partidos que afrontó la Argentina en los torneos más importantes. Estuvo en las Copas América de Uruguay 1995, Paraguay 1999, Perú 2004 y Venezuela 2007; en los Mundiales de Francia 1998, Corea-Japón 2002 (se lesionó en el calentamiento del primer partido, no pudo jugar y su ausencia se sintió) y Alemania 2006; y en los Juegos Olímpicos de Atlanta 1996 (medalla de plata) y Atenas 2004 (presea dorada). Sólo faltó en el certamen continental de Bolivia 1997. El jugador, que actualmente está en Zaragoza, de España, cumplió su última función albiceleste en la final de la Copa América ante Brasil, que la Argentina perdió por 3 a 0.

"En cualquier equipo, el N° 2 es importante, porque conforma la columna vertebral. Con la salida de Ayala, el seleccionado pierde experiencia y a un hombre muy respetado por sus compañeros. El reemplazante no está muy claro. Hay nombres, aunque ninguno firme. Ojalá que aparezca uno que se afiance", señaló Roberto Perfumo, un hombre que conoce bien el puesto y jugó los Mundiales de Inglaterra 1966 y Alemania 1974. "Desde hace ocho años que digo que no se vislumbra un reemplazante de Ayala y nunca se trabajó para conseguirlo. En 10 años, no se formó a nadie. Por ahí, de casualidad, encuentran a alguno. En Corea-Japón 2002, Ayala se lesionó y no había quién lo reemplazara y, así, terminó todo", fue más crítico Carlos Bilardo. "Sustituir a un jugador de ese calibre es muy difícil. Por suerte, la Argentina tiene buenos futbolistas y no lo veo como un problema", se suma Juan Simón, ex marcador central, que disputó el Mundial de Italia ?90.

¿Quiénes podrían ocupar el lugar de Ayala? En la convocatoria para los compromisos ante Chile y Venezuela, Basile incluyó en la lista a Martín Demichelis (26 años, Bayern Munich), Nicolás Burdisso (26, Inter), Fabricio Coloccini (25, Deportivo La Coruña) y Daniel "Cata" Díaz (28, Getafe). También, están Gabriel Milito (27, Barcelona), pero, seguramente, será el segundo marcador central titular, y Gabriel Heinze (29, Real Madrid), que se desempeñará como lateral por la izquierda. En lo previo, quien parece sacar alguna ventaja es Demichelis, que fue titular en el último amistoso del seleccionado ante Australia y convirtió el gol del triunfo. Sin embargo, surgen más candidatos para el futuro como Gabriel Paletta (21, Boca), campeón mundial sub-20 en 2005; o Ezequiel Garay (21, Racing de Santander), que también estuvo en ese equipo, aunque su debut en la mayor no fue el esperado en el traspié amistoso ante Noruega. Quizá se puede nombrar a Walter Samuel (29, Inter), de probada experiencia, a Jonathan Bottinelli (23, San Lorenzo), o al juvenil Federico Fazio (20, Sevilla), que se consagró con el sub-20 este año en Canadá. Nombres parece haber, aunque ninguno saca ventaja.

Los especialistas consultados por LA NACION.com, casi todos ex marcadores centrales, dejaron su opinión. "De los que están ahora, tiene que jugar Demichelis por la experiencia y por estar en una Liga importante como la alemana. Me gusta, porque juega bien y sabe cabecear, algo necesario en el fútbol actual. Otro al que habría que darle una oportunidad en el futuro es a Paletta", considera Oscar Ruggeri, campeón en México 1986 y subcampeón en Italia 1990 y un hombre que también fue titular en los Estados Unidos 1994. Fernando Cáceres, compañero del Cabezón en la zaga central en aquella Copa del Mundo en territorio norteamericano en la que el DT era Basile, va por el mismo camino: "Demichelis demostró buenas cualidades. Cabecea bien, tiene buen físico y todas las fechas en Alemania se enfrenta con delanteros muy fuertes. Esperemos que la ausencia de Ayala no se sienta y que se encuentre lo más rápido posible a un reemplazante".

Hay más opiniones. "Ahora, me quedo con Burdisso. Es un jugador muy completo y lo que le falta es un poco más de altura. Nico va a llegar al Mundial, con 29 años, una edad ideal para el puesto", se juega Simón y sigue: "Al principio, pensé en Ezequiel Garay, pero en el amistoso contra Noruega no rindió. Igual, tiene muchas condiciones y seguramente será el hombre del futuro".

Otro que piensa similar es Perfumo: "Me gusta Paletta. Es rápido, va bien a los cruces y cabecea. Le falta más competencia europea. Si pudiera probarlo, lo haría, aunque ahora contra Chile empezaría jugando con Burdisso como primer marcador central. Espero que consigamos uno y que sea un caudillo como Ruggeri, que para mí fue el último gran central del seleccionado por encima de Ayala".

Desde la óptica de Bilardo, el panorama no es alentador: "Burdisso y Demichelis son buenos, pero como último hombre les ha costado. Garay y Fazio son muy pibes. Tenés que hacerlos y nadie se ocupa".

Ser el N° 2 de la selección no aparece como un desafío fácil, más si se toma en cuenta que a la Argentina no la suelen atacar demasiado. "Necesita voz de mando, ver bien el fútbol, saber ubicarse, imponer respeto, tener personalidad, además de reunir buenas cualidades técnicas para marcar y cabecear. Debe ser un jugador muy completo", responde Simón sobre las cualidades ideales. "Tiene que saber jugar de último hombre, porque la selección argentina siempre va para adelante y hay que estar muy atento para defender. Necesitás un buen físico, altura y que pueda salir jugando", contesta Bilardo.

Lo que surge como una desventaja es el poco tiempo de trabajo con que cuenta el seleccionado por las necesidades de los clubes. "Para encontrar un central hace falta tiempo. Para conocerlo y para que se acople con su compañero. Lo ideal sería que los resultados acompañen para no tener que hacer un constante recambio", advierte Cáceres. Para Basile, el cronómetro ya se activó y debe empezar a resolver este problema central.
